Week 6 - 1/4 Scale Midget Mustang Build
|
31 July 2007 The hatch to cover the
rear servos is now finished and covered - just needs magnets to hold it
in. |

1 August 2007 The tailplane and fin are glued in, the elevator joiner is installed and the tailfeathers have fibreglass applied. I first used two coats of thinners-based sanding sealer to attach the glass cloth and will follow that with a few coats of water-based polyurethane.

2 August 2007 Remade the U/C legs earlier this week. Ended up using 4 layers of cross-weave carbon cloth and 5 uni-directional with extra cross-weave at each end for the bolts. This one seems a lot stiffer. Also stared adding the control surface horns. I don't want screws etc. sticking out the top of the wing so I'm gluing them into the control surfaces. I used ply for the flap horns as I thought it'd be easier to get a good bond to the stiffeners I added when I built the wing. It seems to have worked well.

For the elevator and
rudder I decided to use some 1mm carbon sheet I made from excess material
whan I made the U/C. I first cut out two control horns and drilled a
number of 2mm holes.![]() (Above) The elevator control horn prior to fitting |
Then I cut the elevator
into two parts, removed a bit of material where the horn would fit and
drilled two 2.5mm holes into the larger part of the elevator through the
horn. I cut off some cocktail sticks and cyanoed them into these holes -
sharp side out.![]() (Above) The elevator control and cocktail sticks. |
Lastly, I pushed the
smaller bit of elevator back before removing it and the horn, adding a bit
of 1-hour epoxy (taking extra care to making sure it filled the holes) and
re-assembled. Once the expoxy cured, a light sanding and a bit of filler
it was all but invisible.![]() (Above) The elevator control horn prior to gluing. |

3 August 2007 Sanded the wing smooth tonight - it came out quite well considering I was about to redo it when I had the problem with the water based polyurethane. Also sanded the tailfeathers. Lastly for today started the spats. First sandwiched a layer of 3mm balsa between two 12mm layers using aliphatic glue. Cut out some doublers from 2.5mm ply - these will go each side of the wheel once I've cut out the semi-circle for the wheel. |
