Week 9 - 1/4 Scale Midget Mustang Build

20 - 22 August 2007

(Above) The spats mounted onto the U/C legs with 89mm wheels installed.

Added the flashes to the spats and cowl and the stripe and letters on the fuse. All are spraypainted on except the letters which are cut from black SolarTrim.

Also started glassing the wing control surfaces after drilling the hinge holes and replacing the horns on the flaps. Also continued adding the polyurethane layesr to the rudder and elevator.

I'm using furry cyano hinges on the tail surfaces but Robart Hings Point hinges on the wing control surfaces.

It's quite easy to get them right when the hings are on the centre line but not so easy when offset hinges are used (e.g. on flaps). To help ensure that the hinge holes for these lined up properly I turned an alignment tool from a piece of aluminium bar.

(Above and right) The hinge point tool in an aileron..
To use, simply mark up the hinge hole on the wing or control surface, drill then insert the tool. Align the control surface with the wing and press to make a small indentation as a drill mark. Easy!
I've also started fitting the servos, engine and other bits to the fuse - hopefully they'll stay there until it flies now!

26 August 2007

All the bits together and it looks ready to fly! Unfortunately it is too heavy and the CG is too far back so next week I'm going to be reducing the weight and moving things forward.
